INTRODUCTION TO SIWES
The Student Industrial Work Experience
Scheme (SIWES) is an accepted skills programme which forms part of the approved
academic standards in the degree programme for Nigerian Universities. In 1974,
the Federal Government of Nigeria introduced the national policy on Industrial
training, called the Students, Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). This
programme is under the umbrella of the Ministry of Education through the
Industrial Training Fund (ITF), was designed to help students acquire the necessary
practical education/experience in their fields of study and other related
professions.
This is an effort which was created in
order to bridge the existing gap between the theory taught in the classroom and
practice of science, agriculture, medicine, engineering, technology and other
professional programmes in the Nigerian tertiary institutions. This programme
is aimed at exposing the students to the use of various machines and
equipment’s, professional work methods and ways of safeguarding the work areas
in industries as well as other organizations and parastatals. The programme was
established basically to impact elaborate practical understanding to students
with respect to their various disciplines. It is also intended that the student
through a process of relation to academic knowledge and practical industrial
application would understand the underlying principles and become better
focused and acquire the practical applications towards excellence in his or her
discipline.
The Students Industrial Work Experience
Scheme (SIWES) programme involves the student, the Universities and the
industries. This training is funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria and
jointly coordinated by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the National
Universities Commission (NUC).
OBJECTIVES OF SIWES
The
objectives of Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) are:-
·
To provide students
with the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge into real work
situations, thereby bridging the gap between school work and real world
situation.
·
To expose students to
work methods, modern working equipment’s in their chosen professions.
·
To make the transition
from the Universities to the place of work easier and thus enhancing students
contacts for later job placement
·
To prepare students for
working environments they are likely to meet after graduation
Provide
an avenue for students in the Nigerian Universities to acquire Industrial
skills and experience in their various course of study

CHAPTER TWO
ACTIVITIES
During my stay at ICT Centre Federal University of
Technology Owerri, I was deployed to different departments which gave me more
knowledge and understanding in my Field of study and other Fields too.
2.1 HARDWARE
During my industrial Attachment I did not make deep use of
hardware, but the few i was exposed to are as follows:
CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT(C.P.U):
There are different components that make up the Central
processing unit, during my industrial training i got to understand how some of
these components works and there functions. The C.P.U components which include,
the motherboard, power supple unit, Ram and other unlisted components.
POWER SUPPLY
UNIT:
During my I.T experience I got to understand
that the P.S.U is an oft-overlooked aspect of building or troubleshooting a
computer, but is critical to the proper functioning of the machine. Also it
provides enough power to run all the components you have installed.
REPLACING A RAM (RANDOM ACCESS SYSTEM)
REPLACING A RAM (RANDOM ACCESS SYSTEM)
The computer
system not been able to boot properly, and the C.P.U making a beeping sound,
also when the system is been too slow due to multiple tasks indicates that
there is a faulty RAM. I had to replace the old ram with a better one.
2.2 SOFTWARE
Computer software or simply software is any set of machine-readable
instructions that directs a computer's processor to perform specific
operations. Computer software contrasts
with computer hardware, which is the physical
component of computers.
During
my Industrial Attachment, I came across some Software and web based
applications though I did make deep use of some them. Amongst those encountered
are:
MICROSOFT EXCEL
Excel is like an
electronic version of paper ledge. A
spreadsheet is a workspace in excel that consist of rows and columns that forms
the cells used in working.
A cell reference is
its location or "Address" within a spreadsheet and could be
identified by what column it is located (which makes use of letters) and what
row it is in (which makes use of numbers). Such as A2, Z3.
In Excel aside from
the Formatting in Excel such as Alignments, Orientation, Wrap text which helps
in toggling of letters or figures as wished but the use of formulas is the joy
of using excel in handling records. A formula being a sequences of values, cell
references, names, functions or operators in a cell that together produce a new
value always begin with an equality (=)
sign.
During Industrial training exercise, a spreadsheet was
formed in Microsoft excel specifically used for offline course registration of
students to avoid huge and expensive mistake when registering online.
FUTO ONLINE APPLICATION PORTAL:
The
FUTO online application portal is a platform created for students to enable
gain access to necessary school information, registration of their courses,
checking of school fees invoice and their results and so lot more been done on
the FUTO portal.
Also
the portal was also used for online PostUTME registrations, post graduate and
direct entry registrations. This portal also serves as a platform for students
to learn more about the institution and the history of the institution an so
forth.
2.3 NETWORKING ACTIVITIES
Networking
is the interlinking of several components to enhance their efficient and
effective harmonization and functioning of the overall system. Here, it is
possible for a single device to communicate with several devices all in the
same network region and it supports for sharing of resources and equipment.
NETWORK
COMPONENTS THE
ROUTER:
Routers have a single WAN port and a single LAN port and are
designed to connect an existing LAN hub or switch to a WAN. Ethernet switches
and hubs can be connected to a router with multiple PC ports to expand a
LAN. A router links computers to the Internet, so users can share
the connection. A router
acts as a dispatcher, choosing the best path for information to travel so it's
received quickly.
SWITCHES:
In networks, a device that filters and forwards packets between LAN segments. Switches operate at the data link layer (layer 2) and sometimes the network layer (layer 3) of the OSI Reference Model and therefore support any packet protocol. LANs that use switches to join segments are called switched LANs or, in the case of Ethernet networks, switched Ethernet LANs
NETWORK RACK:
Network Racks organize Network equipment into standardized assemblies that make efficient use of space and other resources. Networking equipments such as Servers, storage, network switches, routers, DVR/NVR, telecommunications hardware and other application devices that fulfill the primary purpose.

3.1 RESULTS:
DIFFICULT MOMENTS/RECOMENDATION:
Well
my industrial attachment was indeed a wonderful one and I am very grateful it
has come to an end all in good shape. I must say, it wasn’t an easy one though
but I still thank God; during this period, I encountered lots of challenges and
amongst them are listed below:
a.
Inadequate facilities to
aid my complementary learning when I get home after work especially practical
aspects.
b.
Also encountered financial
difficulties and it resulted in my missing work for some days.
c.
Finally and more hectic
was the traffic issues as found in my place of attachment. Despite I leave home
early many a time I still arrive late at work and most times some vital
activities had been completed leaving me to miss those.
d.
Also encountered was the
difficulty with which it was to get an IT space .
This
programme is worth having by any student, not just for the excitement of it but
also for the exposure that it brings along. Computer science is the study of
computer technology both hardware and software. The Student’s Industrial Work
Experience Scheme concretizes those theories that are being taught in the
classrooms.
Generally, by virtue of this programme,
I have acquired a lot of technical and industrial knowledge and experience
which would have taken me years of practice as a computer scientist to acquire.
It has also created the opportunity for me to meet senior colleagues in this
field and to tap from their knowledge.
CONCLUSION
Despite
the limitations and difficulties encountered, I appreciate my supervisor,Mr.
Aku Ugonna and other staffs of ICT centre who were understanding and quite
helpful during my attachmentfor their unending support and readiness to teach
me at all time I ask not minding the different units, department all are working
in.
